Medicare Education: Services NOT Covered by Medicare

It’s important to note that Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B (Original Medicare) don’t cover everything.

Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.

Part B covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.

If you need certain services Medicare doesn’t cover, you’ll have to pay out of pocket for them unless you have other insurance or you’re in a Medicare health plan that covers them.

With that said, even if Medicare covers a service or item, you normally have to pay your copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Here are some of the items and services that Medicare doesn’t cover:

  • Long-term nursing home care for more than 100 days
  • Most dental care
  • Eye examinations related to prescribing glasses
  • Dentures
  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Acupuncture
  • Hearing aids and exams for fitting them
  • Routine foot care
  • Care outside the United States
