Medicare Fraud Strike Force Expansion

What are the Medicare Fraud Strike Force Teams? These teams were formed in order to gather data and combine federal, state, and local law enforcement resources to prevent healthcare fraud.

The Background

The first Medicare Fraud Strike Force Team was established in March 2007. They are now currently operating in 10 different areas, the most recent addition being Newark/Philadelphia in August 2018.

Before the recent announcement about the new Medicare Fraud Strike Force in the Newark/Philadelphia area, there were teams in Miami, Los Angeles, Detroit, Houston, Brooklyn, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Tampa, Chicago, and Dallas. Since the start of the teams, the Medicare Fraud Strike Force teams have charged more than 3,700 defendants who falsely billed Medicare more than $14 billion.

There's never been an easy way for Medicare beneficiaries to save on services and products not covered by Medicare alone, until now.

Affirmative Civil Enforcement

The start of the Strike Force followed the establishment of an Affirmative Civil Enforcement (ACE) Strike Force in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania that’s purpose is to investigate and prosecute the abuse of government programs.

The ACE Strike Force, along with the Medicare Strike Force, are examples of prosecutors taking proactive measures in an effort to confront the abuse of government programs, specifically those relating to the fraudulent procurement of opioids.

According to the CDC, more than 40 percent of the U.S. opioid overdoses in 2014 were due to prescription opioids.

Regional Strike Force

The Regional Strike Force is usually made up of people from the Health Care Fraud Unit of DOJ’s Criminal Fraud Section as well as agents from the FBI, DEA, and Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General. U.S. Attorney.

This new Regional Strike Force supplements an already existing Health Care and Government Fraud Unit and a recently-created Opioids Unit.

The Medicare Fraud Strike Force teams have been gradually increasing as time has gone on. We can expect them to continue growing across the country based on the money the current team has already saved Medicare.
