Could there be a fourth stimulus check delivered to your mailbox this year? With many Americans still struggling financially, lawmakers are pushing Biden for more stimulus funds.
A group of 21 Democratic Senators, including Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), sent a letter to President Biden asking for recurring direct payments for Americans and automatic unemployment insurance extensions to be added to Biden’s “Build Back Better” plan. The Senators highlight the fact that 6 in 10 Americans thought the $1,400 payments would last them less than three months.
“Families shouldn’t have to worry about whether they’ll have enough money to pay for essentials in the months ahead as the country continues to fight a global pandemic,” the Senators wrote.
According to a recent report by the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, a fourth check would lift 6.6 million people out of poverty in 2021. Co-author of the report Elaine Maag wrote, “Housing instability and food insecurity remain concerns for many, and an additional payment could help with both.”
President Biden has not yet commented on the possibility of a fourth check.
