President Biden named Chiquita Brooks-LaSure as his new Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) administrator last Friday. This position oversees all things Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act-related.
Brooks-LaSure previously served at the agency during the Obama administration, where she worked on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). She has served as a staffer for the House Ways and Means Committee.
Currently, CMS is overseeing the ACA’s new sign-up period that Biden has created to try to help more people get coverage during the pandemic. In addition, Brooks-LaSure will have to make a decision on how to move forward in regards to one of Trump’s final acts as president, known as the “most-favored-nations rule.” Will Brooks-LaSure lead CMS to lower various drug prices in Medicare by measuring them to other countries? We wait and see.
