Biden Calls Medicare & Social Security ‘Sacred’ And Untouchable

After four solid nights of the first ever virtual Democratic National Convention (DNC), the Democratic party really showed their support of Joe Biden. After accepting the Democratic presidential nominee, Biden gave a speech that expressed his passion to, if elected President, restore the United States to a better place after the tumultuous Trump years.

Biden made it clear that “This is not a partisan moment. This must be an American moment.” He went on to promise, if elected, he would be a president for the people, including those who had not voted for him.

Response to the current state of our country

It was plainly stated throughout the entire convention that Trump has continuously let down the people of this country by his lack of response to this horrific coronavirus pandemic as:

  • 5 million Americans have been infected with COVID-19.
  • More than 170,000 Americans have died from COVID-19.
  • America has by far the worst response to the disease of all other countries.
  • More than 50 million people have filed for unemployment this year.
  • More than 10 million people are going to lose their health insurance this year.

Biden added that “the assault on the Affordable Care Act will continue until it is destroyed, taking insurance away from more than 20 million people — including more than 15 million people on Medicaid.”

He concluded that change must occur to restore the health, the economy, and the character of this country and the first step was to remove Trump from the White House. He remained optimistic and poised as he said,

“In this dark moment, I believe we are poised to make great progress again — and we can find the light once more,” Biden.

A senior advocate

For our seniors, Social Security is a sacred obligation, a sacred promise made. The current president is threatening to break that promise. He’s proposing to eliminate the tax that pays for almost half of Social Security without any way of making up for that lost revenue. I will not let it happen. If I’m your president, we’re going to protect Social Security and Medicare. You have my word.”- Biden

Party Platform

The Democratic party will formally adopt the Party Platform that they endorsed last month. This plan was largely drawn from the Unity Task Force Recommendations, which were authored by representatives of the presidential campaigns of both Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.

Here are some key points of the democratic platform and what will be installed if Joe Biden wins the 2020 Presidential election.

COVID-19 Response- Democrats commit to making COVID-19 testing “widely available, convenient, and free to everyone.” To maintain coverage during the pandemic, the plan is to expand the federal funding for Medicaid and add incentives for states that have not yet done so to expand the program.

Public Option- In addition to existing coverage options, including Medicare, Medicaid, and employer-sponsored insurance, Democrats would add a public option.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) would administer the public option directly; private insurance companies would not have a role. This has been the biggest disagreement in Congress, as private insurers deliver the Medicare benefit to 36 percent of all program beneficiaries.

Drug Prices- Democrats would remove the existing ban on CMS directly negotiating drug prices with manufacturers. Negotiated prices would extend beyond the Medicare program, however, to include coverage purchased by families and businesses. They would prevent branded and generic manufacturers from increasing prices and establish a cap on Medicare beneficiaries’ copays/out of pocket drug costs

(Note: As of now, seniors are required to pay five percent of all drug costs beyond a certain total spending threshold)
