Boosting the Immune System: 5 Tips for Seniors

Your immune system changes as you grow older. It’s important to do all you can as a senior, to strengthen your immune system as you’re more vulnerable to infection and disease. According to the National Institute on Aging, the aging process weakens the immune system. Here are some great tips courtesy of WebMD, that can help boost your immune system and prevent you from having more serious health issues.

  1. Exercise: Staying active gets your heart functioning and your blood flowing properly. It’s also very relaxing for the body and mind. From yoga, to tai chi, to short walks, bike rides, and stretches, exercising can work wonders for your body.
  2. Diet: Due to a variety of factors, eating healthy can be difficult for a senior. It’s important, as you age, to have a nutrient rich diet. Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals and promote healthy living. It’s important to eat lean proteins and whole grains to maintain a low fat diet. Be sure to try superfoods like berries, avocados, broccoli, and kale.
  3. Vaccinations: Vaccinations in flu season have shown to be extremely effective. They lower the death and illness rate in seniors.
  4. Sleep: Having a normal sleep schedule, with at least 8 hours each day of sleep each day, helps the body tremendously. It can help reduce stress and inflammation.
  5. Hydration: Seniors need at least 8-9 glasses of fluid a day to keep mucous membranes moist, which lowers the chances of flu or colds.
