Gym Memberships and Silver Sneakers: What Does Medicare Cover?

Staying active is an important part of aging. It can keep you feeling young, agile, and ward off chronic health conditions like diabetes. But paying for a gym membership month after month can add up, so you may be wondering if Medicare will cover your gym membership.

Does Original Medicare cover gym memberships?

Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) does not cover gym memberships. Medicare Supplement (or Medigap) plans do not cover gym memberships either.

Medicare won’t cover gym memberships, but some Medicare Advantage plans may cover Silver Sneakers.

There's never been an easy way for Medicare beneficiaries to save on services and products not covered by Medicare alone, until now.

What is Silver Sneakers?

Silver Sneakers is a nationwide program dedicated to helping seniors get fit and stay healthy through routine exercise. The program helps you bypass gym membership fees. Instead of paying for a separate gym membership, you just pay your Medicare Advantage premium and have access to gyms across the country.

This program offers more than 70 types of classes to choose from, including boot camp, circuit training, strength and balance, tai chi, yoga, and water aerobics, These programs are offered at more than 14,000 fitness locations across the country, so you can choose between Zumba classes at one gym, free weights at another, and swim laps at yet another.

What are the benefits of Silver Sneakers?

Silver Sneakers offers something most traditional gym memberships don’t: social support. Many members report building strong relationships with other members and participating in potlucks and other community events with people they’ve met through the program.

Silver Sneakers reports that 94 percent of their members rate their health as excellent, very good, or good, and 91 percent of members say the program has improved their quality of life.

These programs can be found at over 14,000 fitness locations nationwide. Over 67 percent of members have a Silver Sneakers location within five miles of their home, so physical fitness is never far out of reach.
