Paul Ryan Announces His Retirement

Paul Ryan, Medicare card, question mark

Paul Ryan has announced that he will not seek reelection to the House of Representatives in November.

The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM) tweeted: “This is good news. Speaker Ryan has advocated many times for cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid while in Congress.”

Newspapers are saying that with Paul Ryan’s decision to retire, cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are much less likely. Is this true? Since cuts to Medicare are not one of Trump’s priorities, it seems like the answer is yes.

Ryan has said that he’s dreamed since college that Medicaid would be dismantled. In December, Ryan reiterated his dream by calling for cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

Why retirement for Ryan?

Speculation is that he disliked his job under the Trump administration. He desperately wanted to cut back on Medicare and other programs, and his efforts weren’t making it through the Senate. Ryan and Trump disagreed on many other items as well.
