Vitamins and Supplements

Not Covered by Medicare

Vitamins are a group of substances that are needed for normal cell function, growth, and development.

The following are the most commonly used supplements:

  • Fish/marine oils
  • Multivitamins
  • Vitamin D
  • CoQ10
  • Calcium
  • Vitamin B
  • Vitamin C

Medicare Part B may offer coverage for vitamins when your doctor prescribes them as a treatment for a condition. If you think you may need specific vitamins or supplements due to a health condition, talk to your doctor about what your options are with your coverage.

Part B and Part D Prescription Drug Plans do not cover most over-the-counter forms of vitamins and supplements.

What to Know

Each Medicare Part D (prescription drug) plan has its own formulary or list of covered drugs, and some may offer coverage for certain vitamins and supplements. Generally, however, they are not covered.

When picking a plan that offers the coverage you are looking for, consider the enhanced alternative coverage. Enhanced alternative coverage means that a plan covers additional prescriptions not covered by your typical plan.

Medicare By State

Medicare is regulated by the federal government. However, private insurance companies are allowed to offer various parts of Medicare, and these plans can differ from state to state.
